Dwayne Johnson has addressed the devastating wildfires in Hawaii in a video message, with him having described the ongoing situation on the island of Maui as "heartbreaking".

Earlier this month wildfires swept through the island, leading to fatalities and significant damage, notably in the town of Lāhainā. Some residents have ended up being displaced and the death toll in the area now stands at 93.

Various celebrities have expressed support over the situation, including Dwayne, 51. The actor - who lived on the neighbouring island of O'ahu for a period growing up - took to Instagram on Sunday to address the situation.

Dwayne said: "Hi everybody! I know that by now all of you around the world have seen the complete destruction and devastation that has hit our Hawaiian islands, our island of Maui. I'm completely heartbroken over this and I know all of you are too."

The former wrestler continued in a video on the platform over the weekend: "Everything that I've seen transpire over these past couple of days, everything that continues to transpire hour by hour, minute by minute, it's all heartbreaking."

Dwayne - who also shared photos of the aftermath of the wildfires - continued: "I have been speaking with organisations on the ground. We've got boots on the ground and I will continue to get as much information as possible." He added: "There's so many needs."

He added in the accompanying caption: "Heartbroken but our faith and mana is strong. First responders, health care teams, hotels, local businesses, boots on the group organizations and all our local heroes, stay strong - we love you and appreciate you.

"All our local families, our ohana, our aiga, stay strong thru this devastating time. Resilience resolve is our DNA. Our ancestors are in our blood. This is who were are. This is what we do. I love you. Stay strong. More to come."

Dwayne tagged the nonprofit organisation the Hawaii Community Foundation in the post. It has been fundraising for the affected communities in recent days and raising awareness of the situation on the island in Hawaii, for example.
