How much can a registration plate really sell for?

It usually costs around £55 to register a car in the UK.

However, it can cost at least a few hundred quid to buy other items for the car including a private plate.

In fact, it's not uncommon for a private plate to be worth more than the car it's attached to.

Here are the some of most expensive licence plates ever sold in Britain.

GB 1 - £325,000.

GB 1 was purchased in 2009 and sits on a Rolls Royce.

The plate and car suggests that the plate belongs to a very proud Brit.

The plate's current asking price has gone up to £1 million.

M 1 - £331,500

The M1 plate was bought by Mike McCoomb in 2006.

He claimed it was a gift for his six-year-old son.

Mike hasn't fitted the plate whilst he is waiting for his son to turn 17, though we think it will be a great present for him on his 17th.

It's current asking price is £600,000.

1 S - £340,000

Not a lot is known about the 1 S license plate.

It was sold in 2010 to a private plate and it's believed it's fitted to a Rolls Royce Phantom.

Since it was bought the buyer has nearly doubled their investment as its current market value is £600,000.

1D - £352,411

This private plate was sold at a DVLA auction at Ardencote Manor Hotel and Country Club in Claverdon.

It was bought by a business tycoon for his wife's birthday.

Despite bearing the initials of the famous One Direction band, there is no connection to the famous boy group.

If the owners sold the plate they may make a small profit as the asking price is £500,000.

S 1 - £404,063

S1 is believed to be the first ever legal number plate produced in Scotland and marks the start of an era on the Scottish roads.

It was sold at an auction for £404,063.

However, the plate is now believed to be worth £1 million.

F 1 - £440,625

The F1 plate has received a lot of attention and publicity.

It was purchased in 2008 by a tycoon in the car industry.

The owner Afzal Kahn is believed to have received offers of up to £10 million but he has refused to part with it.

The registration sits on his Bugatti Veyron.

RR 1 £472,000

This private plate can be traced back to 1925 and was sold in 2018 for £472,000.

It had previously been sold in the late 1960s for just under £5,000.

It's believed the plate was sold to Goodwood bidders who might've been representatives of Bentley cars.

G 1 - £500,000

The G 1 plate was sold in 2011 and previously held the top spot for most expensive number plate in the UK for a year.

It sits on the Aston Martin belonging to an unknown buyer who bought it for exactly half a million pounds.

There is also a government vehicle in Gibraltar which also holds the license plate G 1.

X 1 - £502,500

This is the oldest plate on our list as it was originally created in December 1903.

The X 1 number plate has been described as "exceptional and historic".

It was sold in 2012 to an unknown bidder.

The current owner has made a lucky investment as the asking price has now doubled due to it's age and rarity which means it's now valued at £750,000.

25 O - £518,480

This is the most expensive private plate sold in the UK.

John Collins, a classic car dealer and collector, bought it in 2014 for £518,000.

It's significance and value comes from it's reference to the most classic cars ever built, the Ferrari 250 TR and Ferrari 250 GTO.

John attached the plate to his £10 million Ferrari 250 SWB.

It's current asking price is £750,000.
