When Meghan Markle married Prince Harry and became a fully fledged member of the royal family and it meant living by their rules - which included giving up her favourite food. The former Suits actress, now the Duchess of Sussex, had to follow strict dietary rules following her wedding to Prince Harry back in 2018 - and while the pair were still working royals.

Royal Butler Grant Harrold has revealed the royal family do not eat seafood out of fear of getting food poisoning. He told the Express : “It is a very sensible move to abandon having seafood when out and about on public duties. We don't want a member of the Royal family having a serious reaction to food poisoning, especially if she is on an overseas tour.”

No doubt Meghan was disappointed by this restriction in her diet as she has previously spoken about her love of seafood. The mum-of-two told The New Potato magazine that her "ideal food day" would involve lots of seafood. She said: “A leisurely dinner of seafood and pasta, and a negroni to cap off the night.”

However, seafood isn't in the only restriction as other luxurious dishes are also banned. Mr Harrold added: “As well as shellfish, it would also be quite appropriate for foods such as foie gras to be avoided.” Andrew Farquharson, Deputy Master at Clarence House, also told the Telegraph : “The Prince of Wales has a policy that his chefs should not buy foie gras.”

This is believed to be due to animal welfare concerns rather than a dietary restriction. Other rules Meghan also had to follow include not being allowed to vote, no selfies, no autographs and she must always travel with a black outfit in case a member of the royal family dies.

Harry and Meghan stepped down from their roles as working royals back in 2020. The couple made the decision to leave the UK, moving first to Canada before settling in Montecito in California with their son, Prince Archie. The duke and duchess have now also welcomed their daughter, Princess Lilibet.
