THE use of electronic cigarettes has become an increasingly popular alternative to traditional smoking in the UK.

In 2021, the government recorded between 3.1 and 3.2 million adults use E-cigarettes - therefore it's important to know the rules and regulations surrounding where vaping is prohibited.

Is it illegal to vape indoors?

The places where you’re allowed to vape follow a lot of the same rules as traditional smoking.

However they don’t share the same legislation.

In 2007, the smoking ban made smoking in enclosed public spaces and in the workplace illegal - but the law did not include the use of vapes.

With that said, that does not mean you can just vape wherever you want - organisations are free to make their own policies on vaping on their premises.

Many bars, pubs and restaurants commonly choose to include vaping in their “no smoking” policies.

According to experts, if it’s not apparent whether the public area you’re in allows vaping, simply ask a member of staff.

Experts also advise against vaping in small spaces such as lifts, public toilets, hospitals or other healthcare settings.

It is important to respect others around you when choosing to vape in an indoor setting where the use of E-cigarettes is allowed.

People with asthma and other respiratory conditions can be sensitive to a range of environmental irritants, which could include E-cigarette vapour.

Whilst vaping in a public place is not yet covered under a specific law, there are other laws which do apply.

It is illegal to sell E-cigarettes including vaping liquids containing nicotine to any person below the age of 18.

An offence carries a fine of £2,500.

Is vaping prohibited on public transport?

Most transport companies have prohibited the use of e-cigarettes when using public transport.

If you’re unsure, check the company policies on the website of the service you’re traveling with.

However, the likelihood is that you will not be allowed to vape.

Most bus, coach and Metrolink services will have signs stating if vaping is prohibited.

Similarly, train services will also have signs and will explain the rules and regulations surrounding vaping on board.

Airlines also banned vaping and E-cigarettes on airplanes in 2015, making it legal to bring a vape on the plane, but illegal to smoke it.

Is it illegal to vape outdoors?

There are no laws currently in place in the UK which prevent you from vaping outdoors.

However, if you are at a designated outdoor venue and they have their own vaping policy in place, this will prevent you from doing so.
