New Wrexham signing Steven Fletcher once sold a Lamborghini supercar during the height of his Premier League days just to prove a point.

The former Scotland international is the newest signing at the Racecourse Ground as Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney added a new striker to their squad. Part of the major appeal of bringing the former Wolves striker to North Wales will be the invaluable experience he will bring to the table.

Despite scoring 53 Premier League goals at the height of his career, it is clear that the veteran remains a grounded individual, as demonstrated by a story from his days at Sunderland. Back in 2015, Fletcher felt the wrath of supporters as the club fought relegation.

The criticism came after Fletcher was pictured standing next to his new £260,000 Lamborghini amid the team's troubles on the pitch. The image was originally taken by the car dealer who the forward bought it from and it eventually made its way onto Twitter.

As word got back to the striker that many had been fans irked by the snap, his reaction was one that summed him up. Determined to show that any supporters who had expressed their discontent towards him had the wrong idea, he decided to sell the supercar and instead invested in a 4x4.

Describing how the episode played out back in 2016, he told : "We all make mistakes but I don’t regret buying my car. The fans gave me dog’s abuse for that, of course they did.

"It would have been worse had I tweeted the picture of myself beside this car but I didn’t. I got stick for standing beside my car posing for a picture."

"The guy I bought it through asked if he could have a picture of me. I agreed and two weeks later it fell into someone else’s hands and they tweeted it

"People thought I was a Billy Big Time … they saw the Lamborghini and got the wrong idea about me. I had a reputation when I was younger for showing off stuff but I was brought up in a normal family."

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson will be hoping that his new signing's wide range of experiences will make him a major asset for his squad moving forward. Brought in as an alternative for Luke Armstrong after his deal fell through on deadline day, he made his debut in a 2-1 win over Doncaster Rovers at the weekend.
