TWO British tourists believed to be holidaying in Spain have been killed in a horrific motorbike accident.

The unnamed pair, a man and a woman aged 68 and 65 and believed to be a couple, came off their motorbike in the municipality of Blanes in the province of Asturias.

The tragedy occurred on Monday (September 11) around 5.30pm on the A-8 motorway during heavy rain in the area.

The pair were pronounced dead at the scene.

After coming off the motorbike, the woman is said to have been hit by another car whilst lying on the tarmac.

She then had to be cut free from the underneath of the vehicle by firefighters.

The man was also hit by a vehicle, described locally as a lorry, after he came off the motorbike.

Part of the motorway was temporary closed following the accident.

The Civil Guard is now carrying out an ongoing investigation.

Speaking on Tuesday, a spokesman for the force said: “Two British nationals have died in an accident on the A8 motorway in the municipality of Blanes, near the Balmori exit.

“They were a couple aged 68 and 65.

“They were heading west in the direction of the provincial capital Oviedo when the motorbike they were on overturned for reasons which are still being investigated."

It was initially unclear as to where they were heading but well-placed sources said there was no indication they lived in Spain.

The couple were strongly believed to be holidaymakers.

Blanes is popular with tourists and is well-known for its rugged coastline.
