A healthy 25-year-old law graduate has died from a cardiac arrest while getting cosmetic surgery.
Dayana Loy de Oliveira Freire went for a pre-operative assessment on Tuesday September 12. A day later, during the surgery under anaesthetic, she experienced complications. According to her surgeon at Hospital Jacob Facuri in Goiânia, Brazil, her heart rate slowed as her liposuction incisions were being closed. She then had a cardiac arrest and passed away.
Plastic surgeon Bruno Granieri said he and his medical team tried to resuscitate her for three hours but to no avail. Her devastated father, Duilio Alves Freire, said: “She was 25-years-old, with no illness, was in perfect shape before going into surgery and came out dead.”
Police in Goiás state are now investigating the case after Dayana’s family reported the incident. They are treating her death as “accidental” pending receipt of the forensic report.

Dayana worked as an office assistant after studying law. Gilberto described her as a “vibrant girl”. He added: “She was a very responsible girl. Educated, independent. She always took care of her grandmother and mother.”
Duilio, 43, said: “She had many friends. She was always a very cheerful and very careful person with everything and everyone.”
She suffered a cardiac arrest (Jam Press)Granieri’s lawyer, Luciana Castro, has said in a statement: “Above all, the accused doctor deeply regrets the loss of his patient and is available to the family for further clarification. Regarding the facts, we inform that, due to the duty of confidentiality, the doctor cannot provide technical details about the case, under penalty of violating the provisions of the Medical Ethics Code as well as the Brazilian Penal Code.
“We must clarify, however, that the patient experienced an incident during the procedure, and immediately the prescribed protocols for the case were followed by the entire medical team present; however, there was no response, and the patient passed away. We are informed that at the family’s decision, the patient was sent to the Forensic Institute for investigation.

The accused doctor is fully convinced of his actions, and nothing was done outside the medical technique indicated for the case.”
Castro added: “Regarding the accusations of ‘medical error’ (speaking of this case and any others), we inform that all the facts are being investigated by the judiciary, but we are confident that it will be proven that there was no professional failure or negligence at any time. We must emphasise here that medicine is not an exact science, and complications and incidents can occur in any field, regardless of the skill of the assisting professional, and that patients are duly informed about the risks, sign a consent form, and understand all the possibilities of the indicated treatment.”
