A perverted driving instructor who preyed on his teenage pupils has been put on the sex offenders register after touching them and making inappropriate comments during lessons.

Findlay Munro targeted young women learning to drive in Edinburgh, but managed to dodged a jail sentence last year after admitting targeting four victims while giving them lessons. The 63-year-old appeared for sentencing at the city’s sheriff court on Thursday after pleading guilty to offences against a further four victims.

The Daily Record previously reported how two of the women were just 17 when creepy Munro took advantage of being alone in a car with them. It emerged in court that press coverage of last year’s case prompted the latest victims to contact police. But Munro again escaped a prison term after he was slapped with a home curfew order and an electronic tag.

Sheriff John Cook said he had “stepped back from imposing a custodial sentence” despite Munro committing a “breach of trust”. The sheriff said the victims had trusted Munro to be alone in his car with him and he’d “used that opportunity to behave inappropriately towards them”. Munro was ordered to remain at home between the hours of 7pm and 7am for six months under a restriction of liberty order.

Sheriff Cook put Munro on the sex offenders register for five years. Earlier defence agent Steven Donald said: “These are charges which arose out of press coverage of Mr Munro’s earlier case.” Mr Donald said his client accepted the offences were “serious” and carried out while he was in a “position of trust”. The solicitor said Munro was now retired and had worked with social workers to address his conduct.

Munro admitted touching a 17-year-old’s leg without consent during lessons between August 2014 and April 2015. He also pled guilty to sexually assaulting another 17-year-old by repeatedly touching her leg without consent during lessons between September 2015 and March 2016. Munro admitted making inappropriate remarks and comments about a third pupil’s appearance for the purposes of gaining sexual gratification between September 2015 and April 2016.

And he admitted the same charge against a fourth woman between December 2019 and March 2020. Last year the court heard how Munro, of the city’s Baberton area, repeatedly targeted four victims before a police investigation landed him in court. Those offences took place between 2017 and 2021.
