A man claims he had to discard his clothes after an unexpected eruption of 'brown liquid' from the floor of a Morrisons toilet.

David Devey, 40, from Birmingham, often stops in Nottingham with his partner after visiting family in Lincolnshire. During one visit, Mr Devey made a pit stop at the Morrisons store in Gamston. When he entered the men's room, he noticed a large crack in the floor, marked by a cone.

Mr Devey recalled the horrifying moment: "Whenever you go to a Morrisons or Tesco you just expect a certain level of cleanliness but as soon as I opened the door into the gents, I thought that something smelt off.

"There was a cone there and as I stepped to move around the cone, unbeknown to me I stepped onto a bubble. Under that was this brown liquid which shot up my leg and all over my foot."

Mr Devey added that a security team member told him the floor had been damaged for some time. He immediately lodged a complaint with staff, only to be told the manager wasn't there. The manager has since responded, offering him £20 in compensation.

The 40-year-old refused, saying the sum falls short due to his concerns over any health hazard, as well as the cost of his ruined jeans and flip flops - which he says he was forced to throw out.

He told the Nottingham Post how he returned to Birmingham wearing his soiled trousers. He said: "I had to drive all the way back to Birmingham straight away. We were due to go out for something to eat but I said to my partner that I couldn't have gone out as I was, so I went home and got straight in the shower."

A spokesperson from Rushcliffe Borough Council confirmed they had received a complaint on September 19 in relation to the Gamston Morrisons and that they're investigating the matter.

A Morrisons spokesperson added: "We have spoken to the customer today (September 25) to apologise for his experience in our store and to reiterate how seriously we are taking his complaint. We will be following up with him in the coming days but in the meantime we can confirm that the leak has been fixed."
