A group of firefighters were called out to reports of a raging house fire – but instead found it was just Halloween decorations.

Glens Falls Firefighters received the call out to a fire in Brooklyn, New York, in the early hours of Sunday 1st October. After receiving the call, crews were dispatched to battle what they thought to be a house fire.

But, much to their surprise, the firefighters attending the scene found no fire, but instead an elaborate spooky display to mark the beginning of the month of Halloween.

“Tonight crews were dispatched to the area of Sanford St for a report of a confirmed structure fire,” a spokesperson for the team said. “To our surprise, this was an amazing Halloween decoration.”

A video of the display has been shared on Facebook where it has garnered 303,000 views and 1,000 likes. Flickering red and orange lighting light up the windows of the house, very closely resembling a home which is on fire or perhaps the site of a crime scene.

The spectacle was apparently created by a couple of LED lights, a box fan, a silver sheet and a fog machine. The owner has said the display will be up every Friday and Saturday night until Halloween at the end of the month.

People on social media were quick to applaud the spooky efforts. “It looks very real,” one user commented. Travis added: “That’s impressively surreal! Gonna be getting a lot of calls for this one.”

“I just want to know where they got the decorations so I can get them to spook my landlord,” joked Tiffany.

People who were apparently neighbours of the display also responded positively, commenting: “Our neighbours are so creative! Way to go John & Matt it is so realistic!”

Even the fire department applauded the homeowners for their creativity, commenting “They were both amazing!” from their official Facebook page.

One person took the display of festivities a bit more seriously commenting: “Might be a good idea to notify the fire department that you’re doing this so they know if they get a call for it.”

New Yorkers are known for going all out with their Halloween celebrations and decorations. The infamous Village Halloween Parade tour the streets on the night of the 31st of October, boasting impressive and elaborate costumes. This year promises to be a big one as it is the 50th anniversary of the parade.

Over in Marblehead, Massachusetts, Tom Saltsman works to transform his front garden for spooky season every year building incredible giant Halloween-themed sculptures.

Nearly 7 out of 10 people in the US celebrate and last year Halloween-related spending reached an all-time high of $10.6 billion (£8.7 billion).
