What is a tummy tuck and when did Josie Gibson get one?

A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure performed to improve the shape of the tummy area.

Surgeons can remove excess loose skin, fat and stretch marks as well as tighten the stomach muscles.

The aim is to remove excess skin that can't be removed through exercise, the NHS states.

There are a number of reasons people opt for this procedure including.

Josie Gibson revealed she had a tummy tuck in 2016 - to remove 6lbs and 13 inches of loose skin.

The TV personality told New! magazine at the time: “I woke up and I looked down and could just see flatness.

"I was like, ‘Whoa! I can see my v*gina in full vision!'”

Josie added: “I’ve had 6lbs of skin cut away! But I’m probably several pounds heavier than I was because I’ve not done any exercise.

“I was 10st 10lbs before the operation and now I’m 11st 5lb. And I reckon I am a big size 12.”

How much does a tummy tuck cost?

The price depends on many factors including which kind of tummy tuck you have, the surgeon you use, and the provider you go for.

Most places offer a range of different tummy tuck procedures from a mini tummy tuck right through to a circumferential tummy tuck.

This is where the surgeon uses a longer incision to remove excess skin from the lower tummy while lifting the butt, hips, and thighs.

For the most basic tummy tuck, prices start around £7,000 for a private clinic, but for the more procedures that are customised, they can cost upwards of £14,500.

What is a mini tummy tuck?

A mini tummy tuck is similar to a full tummy tuck, but it's just performed on a patient with less fat and skin to remove.

It removes excess fat and skin in the lower abdomen, below the tummy button.

Whereas a full tummy tuck tightens the entire abdomen.

Does a tummy tuck leave a scar?

A standard tummy tuck will leave a scar, however, it is usually hidden in the underwear line.

They will gradually fade and flatten six months to a year after surgery - depending on how your skin heals.

While there are things you can do to minimise scarring, you must accept the likelihood that the scars will never completely disappear.

Can you get a tummy tuck with the NHS?

In short, you cannot get a tummy tuck with the NHS.

The NHS does not fund procedures that are considered cosmetic in nature.

This includes a number of procedures such as tummy tuck, breast enlargement and aesthetic rhinoplasty.
