INDIAN batsman Shubman Gill is likely to be ruled out of his side's 2023 Cricket World Cup opener against Australia on Sunday.

The 24-year-old has been struck down with dengue fever and will undergo tests on Friday to determine his involvement.

Gill has been India's most prolific batter in ODIs this year, having scored five centuries and five fifties - with a best of 208.

But there are now major concerns within the India camp that he will not participate this weekend.

As reported by NDTV, a BBCI source said: "Shubhman has had high fever since landing in Chennai. His tests are being done.

"He will have tests on Friday and a call will be taken on his participation in the opening game.

"Let's not jump the gun. If it's normal viral fever, he could play on antibiotics but it's completely the medical team's call."

Physical recovery of dengue patients can vary but it normally takes around 7 to 10 days to be fully recovered and match ready.

It is unclear as to when Gill's symptoms started but it already appears to be a race against time for the batsman.

However, Ishan Kishan is ready to fill in for his teammate and will be in line to open if Gill is ruled out.

And he will certainly have big boots to fill, with Gill racking up 1,230 runs at an average of 72.35 and a strike rate of just above 105 in 2023.

India will be looking to hit the ground running at this year's tournament when they take on Australia at the Chepauk Stadium on Sunday.

The hosts were knocked out in the semi-finals by New Zealand four years ago, despite topping their group with 15 points after nine games.

However, they are entering the tournament having played no warm-up matches, with heavy showers washing out their fixture against the Netherlands.

New Zealand kicked off this year's tournament by defeating England by nine wickets on Thursday in Ahmedabad.
