After the news emerged of Wayne Rooney being let go by D.C. United in Washington, his wife Coleen's unhappiness with the location has been unearthed from leaked texts.

In texts sent to Rebekah Vardy in 2018, revealed during the Wagatha Christie feud, Coleen revealed to her then-pal that the United States of America's capital city wasn't her favourite place to be in the world.

Rebekah sent Coleen a message checking in on her, to which Coleen responded: "Hiya, hope your all week [well]. We’re ok thanks its tough being on your own though. Washington isn’t the best....nice to visit but different to live."

She went on: "Not loads for the kids to do, mostly park, hardly any soft plays and things like that. It’s quite behind the UK, which I never would have though. But we will get used to it (I hope)."

Coleen then concluded the message by writing: "Wayne is loving it, and the kids are fine, settled into school straight away. So really happy they are fine. Thanks for the message love xx."

Separately, Coleen sent other text message where she spoke of "homesickness" and how she never believed it was real until they moved to the US. She also admitted to having "cried every night" due to missing her family back in the UK.

Wayne played for D.C. United between 2018 and 2020, which is when Coleen aired her dislike of the city to her then-friend Rebekah. And then in July 2022, Rooney was announced as head coach for MLS side D.C. United. He replaced outgoing manager Hernán Losada.

This comes after D.C. United announced the departure of Wayne Rooney as the club's manager by mutual consent. In a statement, Jason Levien CEO and Co-Chairman of D.C. United, said: "We have spoken with Wayne and agreed it is best for us to part ways at this time. This decision creates the avenue for our next General Manager to have the full opportunity to impart a new philosophy and structure onto our sporting operations, which begins with the critical identification of a Head Coach who will best align with this."
