CHRIS COLEMAN has resigned as Atromitos boss in Greece.

The ex-Wales boss, 53, had a difficult start to the new season as his side were third bottom after just seven games including defeats to Olympiakos, Panathinaikos and AEK Athens.

And Coleman has decided it's the right time to leave after 20 months in charge - the third longest-serving manager in the division.

Former Fulham and Sunderland chief Coleman, who led Wales to the Euro 2016 semi-finals, arrived in January 2022 and kept struggling Atromitos in the top-flight.

He guided them to eighth spot in last season's Greek Super League.

But budget cuts in the summer saw his long-term assistant Kit Symons leave the Athens-based club.

A club statement read: "Atromitos would like to thank Chris for his contribution to our team, since he took it over in very difficult times.

"He has been an example of dedication and hard work.

"He took over the technical leadership of Atromitos in January 2022 and remained on the bench in 61 matches.

“Chris, you will forever belong to the Atromitos family and we wish you every success on a personal and professional level."

Coleman previously managed Wales between 2012 and 2017.

He subsequently joined Sunderland, but was axed in April 2018.

The former defender then spent a year coaching Hebei China Fortune, before returning to management in Greece.
