A UNIVERSITY professor caused controversy with a rant over the use of Welsh on road signs.

Dr Nigel Hunt claimed the bilingual instructions are “unintelligible” and “potentially dangerous”.

The psychology expert’s outburst on a Facebook group sparked a flood of complaints to Wrexham University, where he is a visiting professor.

He wrote: “They are confusing as they contain irrelevant and — to most people — unintelligible information.

“Road signs in two languages are potentially dangerous as it takes longer to determine the message.

As most people even in Wales do not understand these signs (the Welsh language is declining despite the attempts to popularise it) then please just use English.”

His views were slammed as “appalling” and “deeply disappointing”. The university apologised for any offence and is investigating.

A spokesman said: “We are proud to be a Welsh institution and are proud of our Welsh history and heritage.”

Road signs in Wales by law have to be in Welsh first as part of the Welsh Language Act, which tries to promote the learning of Welsh.
