Residents living near Thorpe Park were left fuming after they were kept up all night after hearing terrifying screams from the attractions.

Furious locals, in Chertsey, Surrey, said they were plagued with "annoying" Halloween sounds from the theme park for 12 hours straight. The noise consisted of wails, scary music and shrieks as part of Fright Night which runs throughout October.

Jonathan Tennant, 56, slammed the attraction for not shutting off the spooky sounds and said it lasted from Sunday, October 8, into the following morning. The phone engineer marched down to the front gates at around 3am and recorded the commotion from outside. The local was unimpressed after he was forced to put ear defenders on his 12-year-old terrier Shamus in a bid to calm him down. "It was loud - and bloody annoying," he explained. "The noise started at 10:30am on Sunday and should have finished at 7pm - but it went on and on."

Thorpe Park - billed as the UK's most thrilling theme park - is running 'fright nights' from October 6 to October 31, according to its website. A description of the event reads: "Get ready for an adrenaline-packed day filled with terror and thrills that will leave you breathless! When the sun goes down, the park transforms into a heart-stopping playground of horror, where frights lurk at every corner."

Jonathan said his housemate was also affected by the sounds and said the issue has occurred before. He added: "You could hear it all through the house and it kept waking me and my housemate. She's a teacher and she didn't sleep. I thought there'd at least be security, maintenance staff or cleaners, but it was all shut up and empty." And another local said: "It's ridiculous. The bass started at about 6pm and rattled on until 7am. I've barely slept a wink." The local residents' association have called for a meeting, according to reports.

A spokesperson for Thorpe Park told The Mirror: "We would like to apologise for the noise disturbance that took place on the night of Sunday 8th October. We care about all of our local residents and do our upmost to ensure we are good neighbours. Our team worked hard to establish the root cause of the technical issue and worked as swiftly as possible to find a resolution. We have since put in place preventative measures to ensure we can stop our sound systems from playing immediately in the event of a system malfunction. We are confident that with this new process and with our ongoing proactive sound checks, disturbance will be kept to a minimum during the final weeks of our Fright Night event. We have a long standing positive relationship with our local residents and this is something we value and want to maintain."
