A BABY boy has died after being pulled from a loch in the Scottish Highlands.

Two people were rescued from Loch Broom at Ullapool Harbour on Monday afternoon.

Emergency crews were alerted to the incident around 1.20pm yesterday before racing to the scene at the waterfront.

Coastguard lifeboats and a helicopter were also deployed to the scene and the tot was rescued from the water.

The child was then rushed to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness by air ambulance.

But police on Tuesday morning that the child was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at hospital.

The death is not being treated as suspicious but officers confirmed an investigation is ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the incident.

The quiet fishing village of Ullapool is popular with tourists on the NC500 route.

It's around 60 miles from Inverness on Scotland's North West coast and is the main ferry port for boats to the Isle of Lewis.

A Police Scotland spokesperson: "Around 1.20pm on Monday, October 16, 2023, we were called to a report of a person in the water at Ullapool Harbour, Shore Street in Ullapool.

"Emergency services attended and a baby boy was rescued from the water.

"The baby was taken to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness by air ambulance.

"He was pronounced dead a short time later.

"An investigation is ongoing to establish the full circumstances.

A spokeswoman from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said: “Coastguard rescue teams from Ullapool, Achiltibuie and Inverness were sent, alongside the coastguard helicopter from Stornoway and the RNLI lifeboat from Lochinver.”

An ambulance spokesman added: "An ambulance, air ambulance and HM Coastguard were dispatched to the scene and three patients were transported to Raigmore Hospital, Inverness.”
