Home Secretary Suella Braverman has failed in a bid to deport a “dangerous” rapist.
The Afghan man – unnamed for legal reasons – arrived in the UK illegally in 2006. In 2017 he was convicted of raping a woman, jailed for five years and placed on the sex offender register.
Home Office officials argued “his continued presence in the UK would constitute a danger to the community”. Now freed, he is fighting deportation on the grounds he faces persecution at the hands of the Taliban as an Afghan Sikh.
This week the Upper Tribunal court, sitting in Central London, allowed his appeal on human rights grounds, saying “very compelling circumstances... outweigh the public interest”.
