An elderly couple have been slapped with a restraining order for complaining about their "disruptive" neighbours who host "loud parties" at a short-term rental property.

Linda Bliss and Mark Honold said they have been "held hostage inside" their house in Phoenix, Arizona, due to the overbearing events at the short-term rental property placed behind their home. The pair said they are unable to enjoy their retirement and relax in their garden because of the constant noise coming from the rental. They said the issue has been going on for the past year and claim they have had to deal with strangers staring into their backyard each week.

Linda and Mark said they have alerted the police five times and raised their concerns to the property manager, but the problem continues to control their day-to-day lives.

“We’re held hostage inside our house,” said Honold. “It’s just so loud, you can hear everything.” Since contacting the property manager, the couple were handed a restraining order due to all of their complaints. It was also reported that they shouted at some guests and asked them to reduce the noise.

“It was very demeaning because I’m licensed by the state of Arizona for insurance, working with children, the elderly, and they came and treated me like a criminal,” explained Bliss. Arizona Family contacted the manager following the restraining order. According to the station, all guests and noisy parties are prohibited. The manager further said the couple are the only people to have complained.

Phoenix attorney Jonathan Dessaules has shared some advice to homeowners who live close to a disruptive rental house. He said: “My advice would be to document everything, keep a journal, walk by home and take pictures. If you are going to go to court, either as a victim or witness, or as party seeking injunction, you want to be able to put all the evidence in front of a judge and not just say, ‘Judge, take my word for it. This house is crazy.’” The devastated couple said further action needs to be taken in cities like Phoenix to prevent issues at short-term rentals. “It’s very disruptive,” said Bliss. “It’s totally changed our lives.”

Over in New York, thousands of short-term rentals are expected to disappear from the area. It comes following new regulations known as Local Law 18, which went into effect last month. It has been reported that all future hosts of short-term rentals will need to register with the city. The rule also states residents who are present during guest stays are eligible and guests are capped to two per person.
