Gerrard was appointed by Al-Ettifaq in July, signing a two-year deal with the club.

He has since signed several high-profile players from Europe, including Jordan Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum.

However, Sunday's 1-0 loss to Al-Riyadh means Al-Ettifaq have not won in three league matches.

The Commandos are currently seventh in the Saudi Pro League and already sit nine points adrift of leaders Al-Hilal.

Speaking after the defeat, Gerrard explained: "We didn't show what was required of us. We weren't at the level we'd hope to be at.

"The opposition's plan was clear to frustrate and wait for the opportunities. The mistakes cost us today, we gifted three points to Al Riyadh."

Al-Ettifaq's supporters were not convinced, though, and have voiced their concerns on social media.

One fan fumed: "Being a great player does not mean being an excellent coach. The coach's capabilities are limited and he could not understand the difficulty of the Saudi League."

Another added: "You are the one who bears blame for today’s match. Correct your mistakes."

A third supporter also commented: "Your team is disastrous, Coach. You must correct it yourself."

Meanwhile, one more wrote: "The excuse is unacceptable. This is the state of the team. What is new that you can say?"

Gerrard's Al-Ettifaq will have the chance to snap their winless streak on Saturday when they travel to face Al-Wehda.

That match will be followed by a King Cup of Champions clash with Cristiano Ronaldo's Al-Nassr on Tuesday.
