The family of murdered teen Alfie Lewis came to face-to-face with his alleged killer in court today.

Alfie, 15, was stabbed to death outside St Margaret’s Primary School in Horsforth, Leeds, on Tuesday afternoon. A 14-year-old boy charged with his murder today appeared at Leeds Crown Court at a hearing attended by some of Alfie’s family.

His aunt and grandmother were among those present - though Alfie’s mother Heather Lane, 46, did not attend. Wearing thick-rimmed black glasses and a grey jumper over a white shirt, the boy spoke only to confirm his name.

No pleas were entered during the 14-minute hearing, during which the court was told the suspect would be remanded in youth detention accommodation. A potential trial date was fixed for April 22 next year with the youngster expected to enter a plea on Friday, December 8.

He will stay in a secure children’s home until that date. Judge Kearl told the court that consideration needed to be given ahead of a potential trial to the “protection” of those attending court, including witnesses.

Alfie, described as having a “heart of gold” by his older brother Antony, 22, was understood to have been picking up a friend's brother when the horror unfolded in Leeds shortly before 3pm on Tuesday.

In a heartbreaking tribute following his death, his mum Heather, 46, said: “I haven't got the words to describe how devastated we all are. Alfie you were one in a million, so funny and an all-round entertainer with your rapping and dancing feet.

“You had the biggest heart and took care of everybody around you. You will never know just how much you are loved by family and friends, and you will always be our Uncle Alfie.

“We love you so much. Nothing will ever be the same without you. You will shine in the sky, as bright as you did in all our lives. I love you more than words can say, and you will always be with us forever.”

Tributes have flooded in for the teen, who previously attended Horsforth School. Headteacher Paul Bell said he had been "overwhelmed" by the kindness shown in the local community.

He added: "Everyone's thoughts and sympathies lie with the boy's family and friends. A tragedy like this is a huge shock to our school and local community, and we understand that people will be deeply affected by this rare incident.

"However, we know the community will rally together to support each other during this very sad and difficult time." Anyone with information can call the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team via 101 quoting Operation Poplincard or reference 13230618644.
