MIDSOMER Murders favourite John Nettles looks totally unrecognisable as pictures from his TV past have been unearthed.

John played DCI Tom Barnaby in the classic murder mystery series.

He left the series in 2011 having joined when they filmed the original pilot series in 1996.

Speaking to The Telegraph about his role, John said: "I never thought when we were filming the pilot The Killings at Badger's Drift in 1996 that I would go on to film so many episodes. It has been a joy to be involved in such a long-running series with so many good actors and great storylines."

However, John actually made a name for himself on TV before and unearthed pictures show just how different he looks.

In the 1980s he appeared in the police drama Bergerac as Jim Bergerac, a detective sergeant in Jersey who then went on to become a private investigator.

The show ran for a total of nine seasons with John at the helm.

He looked super cool and dapper during his tenure on the show and even ditched his shirt to show off his muscular body in the classic 80s programme.

It is a complete contrast to how he looks in recent times despite having aged gracefully.

After moving on from Bergerac and Midsomer Murders, John enjoyed playing the role of Ray Penvenen in the second and third series of the BBC drama Poldark.

The unearthed photos come amid news that Bergerac is set to be brought back to screens with a brand new reboot.

It is currently unclear if John will star in the revamped show.

Jim Offman, the executive vice president at Paramount Network, said: "We have several exciting dramas in development, one of which is the classic favourite Bergerac.

"Our hope is that we will be able to commission Bergerac as a full series for Paramount Network International."
