One of the students, 18, has now told of the nightmare from the weekend and claimed three women passed out amid the chaos.

She said the horror unfolded in a Birmingham student accommodation block just after midnight on Sunday, as the group headed out to a Halloween party.

The teen said the group were leaving the 11th floor when one person stepped into the lift and tripped.

She claimed that as a result the elevator started plummeting downwards, before it ground to a halt.

Despite efforts to wedge the doors open and call for help using the emergency button, the youngsters couldn't get free.

In chilling footage, the terrified students could be seen holding each other in the lift, while others curled up on the ground.

The youngsters can be comforting each other, holding each others' hands inside the crammed lift after screaming for help.

The student, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “After waiting 20 minutes and constantly pressing the emergency button we soon realised no one could hear us and no one was coming to help."

She said the group made a gap in the doors and ended up throwing out two phones with alarms ringing in the hopes of drawing attention to the lift.

Eventually, other residents came rushing to help - alerting security and emergency services who raced to the scene.

The student continued: “We then lifted each other out one by one sending the three girls that passed out first and then we followed."

West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “On arrival we discovered three female patients, who were all assessed and discharged at the scene."

West Midlands Fire Service added: "Shortly after 12.55am on Sunday 29 October, we responded to Lancaster Street, Birmingham.
