Adults started CPR before paramedics arrived and rushed the child to Fiona Stanley Hospital in Murdoch, but he could not be revived.

A Western Australia Police spokesperson said the drowning was a tragic accident.

It comes just days after a new pool safety campaign was launched and it was revealed 27 children under the age of five drown every year in Australia.

A seven-year-old boy was last month pulled unconscious from a public swimming pool in Balga, 13km north of the Perth CBD.

The distressing incident prompted the local council to issue a warning to all parents, urging them to put away their phones and keep a close eye on their children in pools.

More than 280 people have drowned in Australian waterways in the past 12 months, according to Royal Life Saving Australia's 2023 national drowning report.

A vast majority of deaths, 77 per cent, were males, and 57 per cent were people aged over 45.

This month, an English mum whose 16-year-old son died while wild swimming with friends said she hoped others would learn from their tragedy.

Kalen Waugh drowned in in Salford Quays in July last year.

His mum Vicky pleaded for other children to stay away from water as wild swimming becomes increasingly popular.

Meanwhile a baby boy died after being pulled from a loch in the Scottish Highlands last month.

Emergency crews rescued the tot from the water and rushed him to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness by air ambulance.

He was pronounced dead a short time later, police confirmed.
