A devastated woman says the guilt of not calling 999 will “haunt her forever” after she heard her brother shouting at her mum on a phone call before he brutally murdered her.

Jordan Bush, 22, was on the phone with her mum Kelly Pitt, 44, and heard her arguing with Lewis Bush. The 26-year-old went on to kick and stamp Kelly to death at her home in Newport.

The mum was later found dead with 41 rib fractures, internal bleeding and mirror glass and clumps of hair scattered around her. Lewis Bush was jailed for a minimum term of 16 years for murder at Newport Crown Court on November 10.

Jordan, who is a mum herself, told The Sun: "On our last call my mum asked me to call the police, but I didn't because I thought it was another one of their regular fights. The guilt of not calling 999 will haunt me forever. Little did I know that it was the last time I'd speak to her.”

She explained how despite Bush subjecting his mother to years of domestic violence, she “never stopped loving him”. She said she knew something was wrong when she didn’t hear from her mum for a few days, as they would normally talk regularly. Now, Jordan feels “robbed of justice” and argues the 16 year sentence isn’t long enough.

The chilling moment that Bush was confronted over his crimes was caught on camera. After being told he was a suspect by police, Bush replied: "Murder, murder? You must be joking," and "what, my mum is dead, serious?" He then began laughing and when police asked if he had "taken anything" he replied: "No."

He continued: "I wouldn't have come here if I knew all of this. Murder? I haven't been arrested for something like this in all my career. You won't harm me will you? It feels like you're all going to fill me in." He was later seen with his head between his legs, pretending to cry as he wailed: "It f***ing weren't me."

The family said: “Kelly was a much-loved granddaughter, daughter, sister, mother and grandmother. She was a loving, caring mother and a devoted nan. She was an all-round beautiful soul, a lovely person inside and out. She was kind, thoughtful, funny and would help anyone. Kelly was taken far too soon and we are devastated by what has happened, she was taken in such a painful way which we will never be able to come to terms with it."

Bush, of Newport, was jailed for life with a minimum of 16 years at Newport Crown Court. He changed his plea to guilty just weeks before the trial was due to start. Judge Daniel Williams told Bush: "That Kelly's life should end as it did is a wrong that no sentence will right."

After the case, Detective Chief Inspector Virginia Davies, the senior investigation officer in the case, said: "The family of Kelly Pitt are left devastated by the loss of their beloved mother, grandmother and sister at the hands of her son. I would like to pay tribute to them for the strength they have shown throughout this extremely difficult time. Nothing will compensate for their loss and our thoughts remain with them. I want to reassure anyone coming forward to report domestic abuse or violence against women and girls that there is a wide range of support services available, and we urge you to come forward."
