One mum was left mortified after an innocent Facebook birthday message ended up costing her an eye-watering £200.

Whenever it is someone's birthday, their Facebook wall is often full of birthday posts and pictures. While most mums are savvy with the social media platform, this parent learned the hard way after an akward blunder.

Virginia Kavanagh wanted to wish her daughter's friend Beth a happy birthday as she was turning 18. But her well-intended, sweet message caused a costly misunderstanding when Virginia also included an image of a Frozen-themed birthday cake.

The mum said she chose the image as it had 'Beth' written on the side of internet cake. But overexcited Beth thought Virginia had gone all out for her special day and bought the cake for her.

Writing on Beth's wall, Virgina's message said: "Happy 18th birthday princess, hope you have a wonderful day, you have always been our favourite!! Lots of love VV & Stephen xxx."

Beth responded and said: "OMG CAN’T BELIEVE THIS!! Thank you so much, Virginia and Stephen! I'll need to pop round today and have some xxx" her reply read.

But rather than just explaining it was a cute picture of a cake with her name, Virginia went above and beyond. Keen to not disappoint Beth, she instead contacted various cake makers and paid a baker to make a replica which set her back £200.

Daughter Lauren revealed the story on Twitter, three years later, and people loved it. One fan said: "Your poor mum bless her."

Perhaps the worst part is Virginia later told her daughter that Beth hadn't touched a crumb of the cake.
