Newcastle's Callum Wilson hits out at Tottenham star over "lack of respect"

Callum Wilson accused Tottenham keeper Guglielmo Vicario of “a lack of respect" after an angry bust-up.

Wilson confronted Vicario who appeared to stick his tongue out to wind up his opponent following Tottenham’s thumping win and the Newcastle striker said Everton’s Jordan Pickford did the same in midweek.

Toon substitute Wilson said: “There's a way to win, isn't there? I think we saw it in the week when Everton were winning and (Jordan) Pickford was messing around. The goalkeeper starts pulling faces and messing around and it's just a lack of respect I thought. But I said my piece, we're grown men and we move on.”

Wilson was involved in another flashpoint with Tottenham defender Cristian Romero as the Argentina centre half was lucky to escape with a yellow card for an X-rated challenge.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe branded it a “dangerous” challenge and the last thing he needed with an already crippling injury list ahead of their make-or-break Champions League clash with AC Milan on Wednesday.

‌Howe said: “I was pleased to see Callum get up from that because it looked dangerous. I’ve got my heart in my mouth when I see any of my players go down at the moment.

“I don’t want to see any player sent off but we can’t use that as an excuse. We have not been at our best. That’s there for everyone to see. The players have given everything but the performance was still not what it should have been. I cannot argue with the fact our away form has to be better. But we will need the crowd behind us on Wednesday night to lift us and our home performances have been very good when we’ve needed them.”

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou praised two-goal hero Richarlison who helped Spurs end a run of five games without a win. Postecoglou said: “Yeah Richy was great. Really important. I can't fault the lads. They put in a massive effort today. Our attacking play was as good as it has been for a while. We are getting players back; you can see Newcastle are running on fumes. We've gone through that and hopefully we are coming out the other side.”

Meanwhile, Postecoglou says he will hold talks with assistant Chris Davies who is a target for Swansea as they look for a new boss. Postecoglou added: “We haven’t had chance to think about it. In the Premier League you have to be 100 per cent focused on the job.”
