DEAR DEIDRE: ALTHOUGH my relationship is well and truly over, I’m stuck living with my ex partner, and she won’t take the hint to leave.

Being in the same flat – her in the bedroom and me in the spare room – isn’t good for either of us.

It’s affecting my mental health and is stopping me from moving on.

I’m 45 and she’s 43. We were together for ten years before we split a year ago.

It was my flat before we met, and she earns much more than me, so it makes sense for her to be the one to go.

We barely speak to each other and the whole situation is so depressing.

I’d like to be able to get on with my life and meet someone else.

How can I ask her to leave?

DEIDRE SAYS:  Many couples find themselves in this situation now, often for financial reasons. Perhaps your ex isn’t finding this as difficult as you, or simply isn’t aware how unhappy you are.

You need to make it clear to her. My support pack, Standing Up For Yourself, should help you to have this conversation productively.

Offer to help her find somewhere new.
