Mac Jones has been slammed as "limited" amid the New England Patriots quarterback's struggles. The Patriots have struggled this season, with many fans calling for Bailey Zappe to be handed the starting spot.
Jones received a fine on New Year's Eve as a result of a low block on Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Eli Apple. The quarterback dove to the ground to halt Apple and send him tumbling while charging towards the end zone.
The quarterback has been poor this season, failing to repeat his Pro Bowl form from last year. After losing his spot to Zappe earlier in the season through injury, fans are starting to believe Jones should be benched permanently.
And former NFL GM Randy Mueller believes Jones is simply too poor physically, and isn't up to the standards required of being a starting quarterback in the league.
He told Heavy: “Mac Jones is limited physically. He’s not Justin Fields. He’s not Trey Lance with the arm. He doesn’t have any of that stuff. But he’s smart, he’s a process-oriented guy and this system is not asking those kinds of things from Mac Jones.”
Rob Gronkowski breaks silence on Tom Brady returning to New England PatriotsMueller explained he feels the Patriots will need to make a significant change in their offensive approach if they're to get anything out of the rest of the season, and Jones going forward.
“I do think that Mac Jones has devolved from where he was a year ago, a lot because of this offense and the ‘Keystone Cops’ that it’s been,” Mueller said.
“I think they’re going to have to have changes in the system, otherwise Mac Jones has no chance,” the former GM said. “And I’m not sure anybody does if we’re going to run this type of setup and be this disorganized.
"When I watch tape, it makes me shake my head and I just can’t believe we’re actually doing this, and I’m tired of the excuses. Sometimes we’ve just got to say what we see. It’s so un-Belichick-like that it makes me shake my head."
