Liverpool are poised to cut Fabio Carvalho's season-long loan move at RB Leipzig short in the January transfer window, it has been claimed.

Carvalho, 21, signed for the Reds last summer after enjoying a fine breakthrough year at Fulham but endured a challenging maiden campaign at Anfield, where he made just four Premier League starts under Jurgen Klopp.

The decision was made to get the young forward out on loan in the summer given his first-team opportunities were likely to remain limited at Anfield. However, Carvalho's temporary switch to the Bundesliga has not gone to plan - and Klopp is ready to take action in the New Year.

A new report from The Liverpool Echo has outlined that the Reds have already initiated contact with Leipzig in a bid to bring Carvalho back to England. Klopp is keen for him to play regular football elsewhere, though, so it seems likely his return to Merseyside will be a fleeting one.

There were high hopes for Carvalho ahead of his switch to Leipzig but he has featured for just 145 minutes in the league this season under head coach Marco Rose.

Speaking back in the summer, Carvalho was asked if Klopp had given him any advice ahead of his move to Germany - a question which prompted him to reveal that there had been little to no contact between him and the Liverpool boss.

Carvalho explained: "I don’t really speak to him, to be fair. He didn’t really give me any advice. I just had to learn as I go, and I feel that is better for me to mature anyway."

He went on to assess his first year at Anfield and explained that he struggled to make an impact because he was being playing in an unfamiliar position. He added: "I feel like the reason it hasn’t worked at Liverpool is because of the position I have been playing on the left, which is not really my position.

"I was told I’d come in and play as a 10, but we don’t really play with a 10. Whereas here [at Leipzig] we play with two 10s. And it's more I'm able to get on the inside, I'm able to turn and go forward. So I'd probably say that's the reason it hasn't worked out."
