MARTIN Lewis has revealed drivers can get a winter essentials car check for free at Halfords.

The Money Saving Expert shared the advice on his show this evening - to the delight of motorists across the country.

He said on tonight's The Martin Lewis Money Show: "Halfords has a free 10-point winter car check with no purchase needed."

All drivers have to do is sign up for the Halfords Club.

The expert explained that the car giant would likely try to "upsell" to motorists - but he said drivers didn't have to buy anything.

Martin continued: "So sign up to its free Halfords Club and book your car check online and in store.

"Break lights, wiper blades, battery health, screen wash and tyre depth, they'll check it for you.

"You may as well get it, you don't have to pay anything for doing so."

The finance guru also warned of an "absolutely crucial" check parents must make that could see them get £48,000 for free.

He said about 200,000 families are currently missing out on the cash.

It comes just weeks after the expert revealed how to get hundreds of pounds in free cash for car breakdown cover.

Martin urged motorists to take some simple steps to make sure they get the best deal possible when renewing their policy.

He explained: "In winter, your car's more likely to breakdown and, if it does, it's more serious.

"While we're talking about the AA and the RAC if you're getting a new cover from them, going via a cashback site like Quidco or TopCashback can sometimes halve the cost of new cover once you factor the cashback in.

"If you are renewing with the AA or RAC, haggle.

"It's the most successful sector of call centre haggling that you can get."

Martin went on that, according to his most recent poll on the subject, those surveyed saw a haggle success rate of 85% with the RAC and 81% with the AA.

He advised drivers to never accept their initial renewal quote and, instead, politely call up and say you will sign on with another provider if the price isn't reduced.

Remember, insurance and breakdown cover companies are competing for your business so have a significant incentive to offer a better deal to keep you on board with them.
