A MOTORS expert has revealed how often you should be washing your car.

Car buying service We Buy Any Car advised drivers that a less-is-more mindset will prevent any unnecessary damage.

The auto whizz urges motorists wash, or at least rinse, your car once every two weeks to keep it clean.

But this is not a one-size-suits-all approach.

For example, folk in rural areas are more likely to pick up mud and dirt than those who drive in cities.

The expert also suggests keeping tabs on any signs of dirt and cleaning the specks before it gets worse.

By rinsing your car with a hosepipe at least once a fortnight, you can prevent dirt build-up from getting out of control.

However, drivers should avoid making contact with bristles - particularly in car washes.

Frequent exposure to these bristles could lead to damaged wax coatings and even scratches in your car’s paintwork.

It comes as a cleaning pro revealed a household item that costs 80p and will get your car mats “looking like new” in just minutes.
