Aston Villa boss Unai Emery insists he is solely focused on his side’s European commitments after fresh plans for the European Super League were announced.

The breakaway league was given fresh hope of returning on Thursday after winning their landmark court case against both UEFA and FIFA. It was decided by the European Court of Justice that any ban went against EU law.

In the face of that decision, the organisers of the European Super League, A22, has unveiled fresh plans that will see 64 teams split into three leagues with promotion and relegation a factor. Villa boss Emery was asked for his reaction and was instantly dismissive.

Speaking in a press conference ahead of Friday’s Premier League clash with Sheffield United, the Spaniard said: "I don’t know how I can respond to it because my Super League is the Premier League. I like to play in Europe and I enjoy playing Champions League, Europa League and the Europa Conference League with Aston Villa.

"I don’t know exactly how they want to create a new structure. I respect everybody and every decision, but I can only speak about our way. For me, it's not more. My focus is tomorrow's game and playing in Europe with Aston Villa."

Emery continues to make history at Villa Park. He led the side to a seventh-placed finish in the Premier League during his debut campaign and sealed a place in the Europa Conference League.

That progress has continued this term. Villa sit third in the standings ahead of the festive period, while they have progressed to the knockout rounds of the Conference League after winning their group.

While Emery has dismissed the European Super League on Villa’s behalf, clubs in the Premier League have also distanced themselves from the fresh plans. Manchester United and Tottenham both released statements condemning A22’s plot, while Chelsea and Manchester City have also reiterated their loyalty to UEFA.

The Premier League have also had their say and have once again rejected the European Super League. A statement read: "The ruling does not endorse the so-called 'European Super League' and the Premier League continues to reject any such concept. Supporters are of vital importance to the game and they have time and again made clear their opposition to a 'breakaway' competition that severs the link between domestic and European football."

After their clash with Sheffield United this weekend, Emery’s Villa are back in action on Boxing Day as they travel to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United.
