IF you've noticed an annoying increase in Ring alerts over the last 24 hours it might be because of Storm Gerrit.

Homes have been destroyed by a tornado overnight with "significant damage" reported in parts of Greater Manchester.

No injuries were reported but many residents were forced to leave their homes.

Other parts of the UK continue to take a battering with less life-threatening winds as Storm Gerrit passes.

But they may be strong enough to trigger a surge in Ring alerts from your doorbell or security cameras.

Not only is it annoying, it can drain your battery too.

Fortunately, there are some settings you can change that could ease the increase in notifications.

Customers have previously cited that their kit generates "persistent alerts" when it's windy outside.

This can be caused by bushes and trees nearby that shake erratically, causing phantom motion alerts.

"Depending on the model of Camera you have, simply snoozing the Camera will avoid alerts during windy days," a Ring forum rep previously told a user.

How do you pause motion on Ring camera?

Motion Snooze allows you to pause alerts from motion on your Ring devices temporarily.

This is useful for times where you expect an increase in movement - perhaps if you're having a party in your garden.

Or, during blustery days like those caused by Storm Gerrit.

This is ideal as it won't adjust any other Ring settings and the camera will continue to record stuff.

To switch it on, follow these instructions:

  1. Open the Ring app and tap the three line menu in the top left
  2. Tap Devices and select the Ring gadget you wish to set
  3. Hit Motion Snooze
  4. Move the slider to your desired length of time
  5. Then tap Start Snooze

If you want to switch it off early, just go back and tap Disable Motion Snooze.

You can also switch on Motion Snooze for all of your Ring devices at once instead of just one by tapping the crescent moon icon on the main dashboard screen.

How can I make my Ring less sensitive?

Another trick worth trying is adjusting the sensitivity of your Ring devices.

To do this, follow the steps below:

  1. Tap the three line menu icon in the top left
  2. Tap Devices
  3. Tap the device you want to change
  4. Tap Motion Settings
  5. Tap Motion Sensitivity
  6. Adjust the Motion Sensitivity Slider moving it down
  7. Tap Save in the upper right
