As the surge in winter illness continues to pummel the NHS, our Prime Minister has outlined his plans to bring the service back from the brink.

Rishi Sunak admitted NHS waiting times are too long and urged hospitals not to cancel elective surgeries in the face of severe pressures on A&E departments.

Despite reports of unnecessary deaths over long ambulance response times and trouble transferring patients into hospital, he offered no time specific frame for improvement.

Elsewhere in his new year speech, the PM promised more hospital beds as well as funding for social care - but is it enough?

Acknowledging the pressure on the NHS, he said: "I know there are challenges in A&E. People are understandably anxious when they see ambulances queueing outside hospitals.
