THE ARCHBISHOP of Canterbury has been left £2.4million in his mother’s will.
Justin Welby’s mother Jane Williams, also known as Lady Williams of Elvel after her second marriage, died aged 93 in July last year.
Newly published probate documents reveal Ms Williams, who served as Winston Churchill’s personal secretary after the Second World War, left everything to her only child.
According to a grant of probate, the Most Rev Welby will receive £2,426,242.97 from his mum’s estate.
The amount could attract inheritance tax of over £800,000, meaning he will receive around £1.5million.

The final amount is 18 times his annual salary of £85,000 as leader of the Church of England.

In 2016, the Archbishop revealed his “complete surprise” at discovering his biological father was not his mother’s first husband Gavin Welby - but a man she slept with days before the wedding.
Mrs Williams had a brief relationship with Churchill’s private secretary Sir Anthony Montague Brown before marrying Mr Welby, who died in 1977.
DNA tests revealed the Most Rev Welby was a result of that liason, which Mrs Williams also said was “an almost unbelievable shock”.
Sir Anthony died in 2013, but was said to have suspected he was the Archbishop’s father due to their striking resemblance.
