THE historic Nou Camp is looking unrecognisable as work continues on its renovation project.

The plans - which are set to cost £1BILLION - have left the stadium looking bare and barren.

The iconic home of Barcelona is one of the most famous stadiums in the world.

But new pictures show it looking a shadow of its former self with dust covering most of the venue.

The stadium has been empty since the start of the season with Barca playing their home fixtures at the Estadi Lluis Companys Stadium this term instead.

Work on the stadium has seen the third tier of the ground completely removed and all the seats ripped up while it sits surrounded by dust and cranes.

And the pitch has been completely uprooted too with dirt laying in its place.

The changes are reportedly leaving locals upset with the 67-year-old ground having a deep history in the area.

The re-development began in June last year and is not anticipated to be completed until the start of the 2025/26 campaign.

However a setback with obtaining the necessary licence has cast doubt over a timely return for Barcelona.

The Catalan giants unveiled their plans to expand the previous 99,500 capacity to reach an incredible 105,000 people.

CGI mock-ups showed how the stadium will eventually look with a roof being added an a modernised vibe given to the ageing arena.

Previously the upper tier of the Camp Nou only sat on 50 per cent of the stadium, but the new works will see the new stand curve all the way round ground.

While designs released by the club show that the roof will be plastered with the name of their stadium sponsor, Spotify.
