A couple has been left raging after finding a food product they bought at Aldi was two weeks out of date.

Gordon and Joanne Irvine, from Whitburn in West Lothian, said they were "frustrated" after raising their concerns with their local supermarket. Gordon, 42, said the pair went shopping on February 7, but found the black pudding they'd purchased was stamped with a use-by date of January 20, 2024. Despite sharing the proof of purchase with the popular supermarket, they said they've been made to "feel like liars" after they complained.

When they told Aldi, a representative said staff check products throughout the day, but did admit that their "high standards weren't met" on that occasion.

On Friday, Edinburgh Live understands that an environmental health officer from the local authority visited the store in Whitburn. This came after the couple also raised concerns back in 2021 after noticing packets of biscuits on the shelves on July 21, with the best-before-date marked July 3, 2021.

Gordon said: "It’s not about wasting money or changes to their food, it’s about the fact that Aldi is getting away with selling out-of-date products and then neither apologies or fix the issue. I feel frustrated. I think Jo feels like she’s being made to be a liar, particularly with Aldi's response of ‘they do checks at the point of delivery, during the day and close of business'. Unfortunately Aldi is our closest supermarket. Jo was diagnosed with cancer in September and also has lupus and rheumatoid arthritis and has been on an immunosuppressant, so she doesn’t like to go too far to shop."

An Aldi spokesperson said: “We have strict processes in place to ensure our products are fresh and within their best-before dates. If customers ever have any issues with a product they can return it for a full refund. We apologise that our usual high standards weren’t met on this occasion, and we’ve shared the feedback with our Whitburn team.”
