Keir’s dithering

LABOUR has inflicted huge damage on itself by dithering so shamefully over the Rochdale by-election scandal.

Its candidate Azhar Ali should have been cut adrift the moment he was exposed for peddling an entirely false anti-Semitic conspiracy theory.

Instead, shadow ministers were sent out to deliver the ridiculous excuse that Ali was an unfortunate dope, tricked by the internet into making comments entirely “out of character”.

It was only when the political heat became unbearable that Labour officials tonight reluctantly announced all campaigning on Ali’s behalf would cease.

Farcically, he will remain the party’s candidate in Rochdale, since nominations have now closed.

But MPs will be spared the ignominy of having to knock on doors or post leaflets emblazoned with his name.

Sir Keir Starmer has few policies of note — having ditched his ruinously expensive £28billion eco pipedream only last week.

But what he could claim was that he had made big strides in ridding Labour of the vile anti-Jewish sentiment that flourished under Jeremy Corbyn.

By standing by Ali for 48 hours, he’s gone backwards on that front, too.

Border chaos

WHILE an unholy alliance of bishops and left-wing peers attempt to wreck the Rwanda Bill in the Lords, the least we expect from the Home Office is to try to protect our borders properly.

No such luck.

Today we reveal that the much-heralded fleet of Border Force cutters and patrol boats designed to track illegal crossings have been forced out of service.

And another £5million has been spent on using private vessels in their place.

Meanwhile, two illegal migrants found hiding in the luggage hold of a school coach returning from France escaped arrest, and can now look forward to a lengthy stay in the UK.

Is there any wonder our borders are considered a laughing stock?

Indefensible

DONALD Trump’s reckless disregard toward the threat posed by Vladimir Putin is shocking.

But he IS right to raise again the scandal of European leaders enjoying the comfort of the NATO security blanket — while failing to pay their share for it.

At a time when Russian aggression is at a 40-year high, Europe needs to defend itself.

If Trump were ever to enforce his pre-election rhetoric, the results would be catastrophic.

Alarm bells should be ringing across the European Union.
