WOLVERHAMPTON is the drink and drug drive capital of the UK, a study has revealed.

Drivers in 9.4 per cent of all road collisions in the Black Country city were over the limit, analysis of Department for Transport figures showed.

Leicester was second highest at 8.8 per cent, Coventry third on 8.6 per cent and Plymouth and Wrexham joint-fourth with 8.5 per cent.

The areas with the lowest rates in rehab provider Abbeycare’s study were the City of London and Westminster, both on two per cent.

Edinburgh had 2.5 per cent, Stirling 3.7 per cent and Dundee 3.9 per cent.

There are 130,000 road accidents in the UK each year, with 6,500 caused by the driver being drunk or high on drugs.

A spokesman for Abbeycare said: “We wanted to find the cities and regions most affected by intoxicated drivers and found that Wolverhampton is the UK’s drink and drug driving hotspot.

“Nearly one in ten of the road collisions in Wolverhampton involve alcohol or drugs.”
