IRISH Surgeon Anthony McGrath was jailed for staging a burglary and committing mortgage fraud worth almost £1million.

Who is Anthony McGrath?
Anthony McGrath was a hospital surgeon who was aged 46 when sent to jail.
He married Anne-Louise McGrath, a GP, in 2009 and the couple moved to London where she got a job at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital.
The couple also had four children, who attended private school.

McGrath from St Albans, Hertfordshire, where he owned a £1.1million seven-bedroom house.
They were paying £2,400 a month on a five-bedroom cottage in Bedfordshire at the time.
All their property resulted in an £825,000 mortgage and later raised another £135,000 with a re-mortgage.
The doctor was a James Bond fan, taking pictures of himself in his £50,000 Maserati sports car.
He nicknamed himself 'Paddy Bond'.
What crime did Anthony McGrath commit?
McGrath staged a burglary at the property he and his wife were renting on the Luton Hoo Estate, in order to claim insurance.
He stole 95 items including a £35,000 Persian rug, two clocks, antiques, artworks, jewellery, and a 19th-century red marble fireplace.
According to the DailyMail, he and his wife were in "tens of thousands" of debt.
Some of the items were shipped to another family home in Ireland.
Upon an investigation, police found that he and his wife also committed three counts of mortgage fraud, adding up to over a million.

Where is Anthony McGrath now?
McGrath was jailed in 2019, after being found guilty of fraud by false representations and committing acts with intent to pervert the course of justice.
Meanwhile, his wife Anne was charged with mortgage fraud.
However, she was found not guilty of all charges.
Judge Barbara Mensah said: "The offences were sophisticated, detailed, well planned and carried out over a long period of time.
"McGrath has demonstrated pathological levels of dishonesty and arrogance, and took every opportunity to attack and defraud his insurance company."
In January 2018, a Luton Crown Court sentenced him to eight years in jail.
In March 2021, he was given three months to pay back more than £500,000 or he'd have to spend an extra five years in jail.
He had to pay £564,518 after a three-day Proceeds of Crime Act confiscation hearing.
McGrath had several assets which were examined by Judge Steven Evans.
These include:
- benefits from his dead parents' estate
- the family home and grounds at Somerville House
- a Georgian built country property in County Meath, Ireland
- a £1445 old Fiat car
- "antiquities, art and valuable' worth at least £139,000
- McGrath's £37,000 inheritance from his parents.
No reports on whether he paid the amount or not have been revealed.
