A "huge meteor" was spotted over huge swathes of eastern England this evening, witnesses said.

The "fireball meteor" was spotted in a number of areas, including Norfolk, Lincolnshire and Yorkshire. People took to social media shortly before 6pm to report seeing a "green" blur. On Facebook, Amy Louise said: "Just saw a huge meteor driving back home (between York and East Riding), did anyone else see it? About 5.40pm-ish." She added: "I’ve seen small ones before but this one was big with a flame tail and everything!"

Replying to the post, Louis said: "I saw it . . . ball of flame that headed east and lasted about four seconds before fizzling out over Bielby or Shiptonthorpe." Others replied saying they had seen the sight in Cambridgeshire, Chesterfield and Wakefield.

In Lincolnshire, people took to X to report seeing the meteor, according to LincolnshireLive. Catt (@CattNKaboodle) posted a video from their dashcam footage, saying: "Meteor?" and added: "Saw this evening in Grantham, Lincolnshire."

Moo @MissSpookyMoo posted: "Seeing chatter about an epic green meteor spotted over the UK within the last half hr." Ravenly Art added: "Saw it in Lincolnshire! Fireball meteo . . . I'm hoping someone caught it on their ring doorbell or something! Never seen one like that before."

According to Nasa: "A fireball is an unusually bright meteor that reaches a visual magnitude of -3 or brighter when seen at the observer’s zenith. Objects causing fireball events can exceed one meter in size. Fireballs that explode in the atmosphere are technically referred to as bolides although the terms fireballs and bolides are often used interchangeably."

In January, we reported how a small Welsh town believed that aliens had invaded after the ground started shaking. Many believe the phenomena may have been the result of a meteor strike. On a cold, dark night the residents of a small town were settling down when they were interrupted by the ground suddenly shaking - before a light appeared above.

Terrified, people ran from their homes in Bala in the Berwyn Mountains of Wales, believing they had been hit by an earthquake. Instead, they became witnesses to an incident which became known as the Welsh Roswell - Roswelsh. On the night of January 23 1974 “something came down” in a blaze of light over the homes of the town’s residents. Children already in bed were woken by the loud bang. Whatever it was caused the Richter Scale to jump to 3.5.

One woman described looking out of her window and seeing “something large” being loaded into the back of a truck. She also recalled soldiers in the area. A witness said at the time: "It was a bright red light, like coal-fire red. It was a large perfect circle. Like a big bonfire. I could see lights above and to the right and white lights moving to bottom. The light changed colour to yellowish white and back again."

Gwynedd Police Constabulary's major incident log for that night confirmed calls made regarding a UFO sighting in the area as well as an explosion at around 9pm. Officially, local search and rescue teams were sent to the area believed to have been hit but no wreckage was found. Unofficially, some people claim whatever was found in the area was secretly removed. Whether it was a test plane or something from another world is not, and may never be, known for certain.
