Aged 44, Danny was found dead in a motel room with his death being ruled a suicide.

Now, Netflix documentary American Conspiracy: The Octopus Murders charts just what happened in the case that many have said "never sat right".

The controversy surrounding the death stemmed from Danny developing a story he had titled The Octopus.

The writer had allegedly been on his way to meet a source for his investigation into a shadowy body he believed was linked to spyware and money laundering, and connected to corrupt government officials.

It was a familiar story among Washington DC journalists in the 1980s, which arose from a dispute between the Department of Justice and tech company Inslaw.

What seemed to be a disagreement regarding intellectual property rights soon appeared to take a turn with the journalist believing he had uncovered a hidden organisation.

According to research found, Danny had written: "These eight men, they're no longer government officials but their tentacles can reach into any part of government in almost any country."

Danny soon developed an "obsession" with the case and thought he had discovered a secret computer programme, titled Promis, which he claimed was linked to a string of suspicious deaths.

The documentary shares a disturbing conspiracy that the "programs allegedly allowed the CIA to spy on the intelligence agencies that bought it".

Having tracked down a key source for the story in summer 1991, Danny went off to meet them.

However, he never made it back and was found dead soon after.

In a preview of the Netflix show one man states: "It just didn't sit right. In my mind, I'm thinking 'They killed him'."

Another states: "The book that Danny was writing, he starts looking into these powerful people and realises there's something much bigger going on."

One commentator says: "Most of us were convinced he had been hurt for him covering this story."

It has consequently left fans of unsolved mysteries questioning if all was as it seemed.

Casting doubt over the case, one said: "It just didn't sit right, in my mind."

Before another expressed their joy at seeing the case unravel, writing: "Wow this is one of my favourite cases on Unsolved Mysteries."

Many of his family and friends do not believe the journalist took his own life.

American Conspiracy: The Octopus Murders releases on Netflix on 28 February.
