La Liga president Javier Tebas has promised to resign should the European Super League come to fruition.

The original plans surfaced in 2021 which saw a host of European giants put their names forward. The plot very quickly collapsed as sides - including Premier League clubs Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham - all pulled out.

However, the European Super League was given fresh hope after its organisers A22 Sports won its court case against UEFA and FIFA at the European Court of Justice. Those in charge of Spanish football have been left furious.

Tebas has claimed that he will leave his post should a plan get approved. Speaking to El Mundo, he said: "I call it the lying Super League, the fake. I call it that because everything is a lie.

“They want to put a different face, that of Bernd Reichart, what I call Bernd Copperfield, but the one behind it is Florentino [Perez]. It is a liar in that because they say that they are not going to harm the national leagues when they know that they are going to [...] If it goes ahead, of course I will resign.

“I would leave because Spanish football would be heading towards a terrible economic problem. The income would shortly be half the time. I cannot continue in something in which we would go to ruin and catastrophe.”

Perez, a constant backer of the European Super League was unwavering in his support following A22’s success in the European courts earlier this season. Speaking at the time, he said: "At Real Madrid we welcome with great satisfaction the decision taken by the Court of Justice of the European Union, which is responsible for guaranteeing our principles, values and freedoms.

"In the coming days we will carefully study the scope of this resolution, but I do anticipate two conclusions of great historical significance. First of all, that European club football is not and will never be a monopoly again.

“And secondly, that from today the clubs will be the owners of their destiny. Clubs see fully recognized our right to propose and promote European competitions that modernize our sport and attract fans from all over the world. In short, today the Europe of freedoms has triumphed again and today soccer and its fans have also triumphed.

"Faced with the pressures we have received for more than two years, law, reason and freedom are imposed today. And for this reason, Real Madrid will continue to work for the sake of football."
