But he batted away questions over a lack of GP appointments and pay for junior doctors, saying: “We don’t have a magic money tree.”

On a general election, Rishi said he felt confident, joking: “I’ve been fuelled by the chicken from This Morning.”

He also repeated that the election would likely come in the second half of the year.

The maximum term of a Parliament is five years after the day it first meets.

The last general election was called in December 2019 by Boris Johnson, so parliament will next automatically dissolve on December 17, 2024 — meaning a general election will take place on January 24, 2025, at the very latest.

Sitting prime ministers have the power to call a general election early if they so choose.

The contests are traditionally held on the first Thursday of May to coincide with local council votes.

There must be 25 days notice for an election, so candidates can go into campaign mode.

In order for this to happen, Parliament is dissolved and major government business suspended.

That means the latest the next contest could be announced is December 29, 2024.
