Gary Lineker was left in disbelief on social media after witnessing Erling Haaland's horror miss in Sunday's Manchester derby.

The Norwegian striker, 23, has shattered a host of goalscoring records since joining Manchester City from Borussia Dortmund last summer. In total, he's plundered 79 goals in just 83 games for the reigning Premier League champions - and Manchester United have experienced firsthand how deadly he can be.

Haaland scored twice in City's 3-0 win at Old Trafford earlier in the season and bagged a hat-trick in last year's derby. But he somehow blazed over a golden chance in Sunday's match, blazing a volley into the upper tier from just a couple of yards out.

The extraordinary miss, which came at a time when City were trailing in the match, left social media stunned - and Lineker was no exception. The Match of the Day host posted: "That might be the worst miss I’ve ever seen at this level. @ErlingHaaland has to head it. Incredible."

Lineker was far from the only famous face to pass verdict on the incident online. Arsenal fan Piers Morgan also stuck the boot in, posting: "Most diabolical miss in world football history. Congrats @ErlingHaaland."

The miss, which meant United went in at the break a goal ahead courtesy of Marcus Rashford was further analysed in the Sky Sports studio. Former United captain Roy Keane event went as far as to brand it "unbelievable".

He said: "This is unbelievable really. When you think of the game of football and what a world class striker he is, I really can’t explain it. It’s good play by Rodri, lovely knock back by Foden, he just has to head it in or a softer touch. He’s probably thinking I have already scored. Unbelievable but maybe that is the bit of luck United needed."

Fortunately for Haaland, Phil Foden spared his blushes early in the second half when he arrowed a fine left-footed strike beyond Andre Onana after cutting in from the right.

The goal came in a phase where Rashford was muscled off the ball by his England teammate Kyle Walker. City transitioned swiftly, much to the fury of Erik ten Hag, who was booked for his reaction on the sideline.
