A TEACHER died suddenly from the flu just months after marrying his high school sweetheart, his family has revealed.

Harrison Vaughan, 25, from North Carolina, tragically lost his life to complications of the virus after his condition rapidly declined in days.

He married Hayley — who he had been with since they were in the ninth grade — nine months before the tragedy on February 20.

She told FOX8 WGHP: “We are all heartbroken. I know I can’t get through this alone.”

Richard Hardee, the head of Calvary Day School where Harrison worked as a PE teacher and baseball coach, said Harrison was a “terrific young fella”.

Flu is a virus that is particularly common in winter and can lead to deadly complications, especially in the young, elderly and immunocompromised people.

Cases surged in Britain over the winter period, with health officials warning the new school term could be a breeding ground for bugs and coughs.

The latest figures from the NHS show there were an average of 1,837 patients in hospital with flu each day last week in England.

It was more than three times higher than the same week last year.

Symptoms include a high temperature, aching body, feeling tired or exhausted, dry cough, sore throat, headache, difficulty sleeping, loss of appetite, diarrhoea and vomiting.

You should go to a doctor if you have symptoms of the flu and are aged 65 or over, pregnant, have a long-term medical condition or weakened immune system, or if symptoms don’t improve after a week.

Harrison tragically died just days after his symptoms started.

In a statement, the school said: “It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we inform you of the death of our colleague and friend, Harrison Vaughan, who passed away today.

"We will miss him more than words can express.

“Please pray for Harrison's wife, Haley, his parents, Erik and Holly Vaughan, his siblings, Hunter and Olivia-Beth, and the entire Vaughan family.”
