Time to act over Gaza

It shouldn’t take the death of seven aid workers to push the West into action when 33,000 Palestinians have already been killed by the Israeli invasion of Gaza.

The deaths of so many ordinary Gazans – the majority innocent women and children – was reason enough for an abatement in the fighting.

But any accusations that some lives are considered less important than others should be put aside and efforts directed to the search for peace.

We should not forget those 1,200 people who died when Hamas attacked Israel. But we should bear in mind a sense of proportion between the losses of both sides. And the response of Israel’s hardline PM Benjamin Netanyahu that “it happens in war” should not be left unchallenged.

The aid workers were travelling in clearly marked vehicles along a “safe” route yet were still targeted. A full international investigation is required, alongside global condemnation.

There are grounds for consideration of the perpetration of war crimes and we should not shy away from this matter. This tragedy among tragedies should be the one to spur Israel’s friends into meaningful action.

PM’s the joke

When the general election will be held is no laughing matter for families struggling with the cost of living crisis, patients stuck on record NHS waiting lists or victims of crime denied justice.

Rishi Sunak treating the question as a joke shows the arrogance of a Prime Minister totally out of touch with the British people, putting himself before millions of others.

Naming the date would ease uncertainty while holding that contest soon would spare him and his party the anger of a country yearning for a fresh start.

Sunak won’t be laughing after voters are allowed into polling booths to have their say in a general election.
