Singer Raye says being a woman in the music sector is hellish, adding she has been abused over her looks.

The 26-year-old receives a constant barrage of criticism from online trolls, who claim she does not look feminine. Raye revealed: “Being a woman in this thing, you’re critiqued on your appearance alone, and it’s sh*t*. People talk about my weight, people have been saying I don’t look like a woman; really nasty comments that go round and round in your head.”

She poured her heart into album My 21st Century Blues, which last month led to her record haul of six Brit Awards in one year, including best artist.

In it, she dealt with topics including substance abuse and sexual assault. Raye, real name Rachel Keen, said she plans to get more therapy before dating again, adding: “I don’t want to go into this next chapter feeling insecure.”

Raye overcame a career hurdle when her ex-record label stalled the release of her album, encouraging her to write for other acts. She told ELLE magazine: “I was putting out music I hated, working stupidly hard, dealing with trauma and making a lot of bad decisions. Add substance abuse... it was a messy time.”

Raye, who posed in white undies, and a matching lace dress and platform shoes, admits the difficulties eventually set her on the path to success, adding: “Twisted and horrible as it was, I wouldn’t be in this position now.”

The singer, from Tooting, South London, hired her mum Sarah and dad Paul to manage her career, which she credits with helping her mental health as well as her work. She says: “Before I involved my parents in my career, I was so lost and really not doing well.”

The May issue of Elle UK goes on sale from tomorrow.
