Gaby Roslin has stepped in for Zoe Ball on BBC Radio 2 after the breakfast presenter revealed her break from the show last night.

Zoe, 53, will be taking time off after her mum was diagnosed with cancer and thanked longtime pal Gaby, 59, for taking the reins today. Alongside a picture of her mum Julia in hospital and surrounded by her loved ones, the star wrote: "Heartbreakingly our beautiful Mama Julia has been diagnosed with Cancer."

"As many of you know from experience, these are extremely tough times. mum is being incredibly brave. My brother Jamie & I are completely in awe of the brilliant Doctors, Nurses & support teams looking after mum. Thank you."

Zoe went on to thank her family and friends for supporting her and also sent love to anyone else going through the same thing. The star added: "I'm trying to be at work on breakfast as often as I can but occasionally need to be home with my Mama. thanks to Gaby for stepping in. Lots of love."

Gaby, who has a weekend slot on BBC Radio London, was among the first to share words of support. She wrote in the comments: "Love you Zoe and such huge love to your beautiful mummy."

The broadcasting legend, whose mum died of smoking-related lung cancer in 1997, also shared a poignant message to her followers on Instagram. She posted: "Blossom in the morning and then a sky like this in the evening and birdsong everywhere."

"As I keep saying it's the little things. Life is so precious. Make the most of each moment. And if you can get out for a walk please do. #sunset #walks #keepwalking By the way I didn't use any filters. The sky really was this colour."

Zoe's heartbreaking post was met with well wishes and a number a celebrities took to the comments section with messages of support. Strictly Come Dancing's Dianne Buswell wrote: "Sending all my love." Whilst former contestant John Whaite commented: "Much love to you all."

TV presenter Angellica Bell said: "Sending love to your mum, you and your family. Stay positive." Sarah Cawood responded: "Oh Zoe my darling, this is awful news and I'm so sorry. Sending your mama so much love and strength to take on the challenges she now faces, and to you too, in supporting her. Massive massive cuddles to you all."

Dancing on Ice finalist Adele Roberts said: "Thinking of your amazing mum and sending so much love to you all." Whilst former Gogglebox participant Reverend Kate Bottley wrote: "You never face anything alone. You are loved and that's the strongest thing in the world. We got you."
